Derek Dooley is still relying on the relationships he made while he was head coach at Louisiana Tech.
Dooley apparently made an impression with a Louisiana star running back and has kept his promise to the up and coming athlete.
InsideTennessee.com caught up with Louisiana native Derek Milton, who ended up deciding to play his senior season at Hargrave Military Academy.
“I went to summer camp at Louisiana Tech,” Milton said. “That’s where I first met Coach Dooley. He told me then if he ended up going to a bigger school that he would always keep up with my career. He has kept that promise.”
Milton, a 6-foot-0, 198-pound tailback, played his senior season at Hargrave and will graduate in May. He finished this past season with over 740 yards on just 43 carries and 10 touchdowns in just seven ballgames. He will have five years to play four at the school of his choice.
“Tennessee began recruiting me in November,” Milton said. “Coach Jim Chaney the offensive coordinator offered me on the spot.”
While Milton hasn’t been to the Knoxville campus, that doesn’t mean he hasn’t followed the Vols this season.
“I watched their bowl game the other night,” Milton said. “I was very impressed. Their offense fits my style of play perfectly.”
According to Milton, Chaney and the Vols coaching staff feels that he can come in and play early for the Vols.
“Coach Chaney told me that he feels I can come in and play right away,” Milton said. “He wants a speed guy that can come in and take it the distance any time he touches the football. That’s exactly my game.”
Milton currently has offers from Tennessee, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, North Carolina and Memphis.
Does Milton have an early favorite?
“Right now I don’t favor anyone over anyone else,” Milton said. “I like Tennessee a lot. I think Coach Dooley is definitely a guy that I can see myself playing for.”
Many might wonder why the Pineville, Louisiana native decided to go to Hargrave for his senior season.
“Really for two reasons, to play against a higher level of competition and to better myself academically, I have accomplished both by playing at Hargrave. I’m ready for the next step of my career.”
Dixon will take an official visit to Rocky Top on January 28th.
