Vol offensive coordinator Randy Sanders plans to give Clausen a long look in the annual spring scrimmage, set for a 3 p.m. kickoff. ''With the Orange team, I expect Casey to get the first half, maybe the first two series of the second half,'' Sanders said earlier today. ''Then we'll probably alternate James (Banks) and C.J. (Leak) ... let them finish out the game. Maybe we'll let one have the third quarter and one have the fourth quarter.'' Sanders said tailback Cedric Houston will see some action but won't play a great deal because of a sore ankle that caused him to miss considerable work earlier this spring. ''I don't want to put him in a bad position and risk injury at this point,'' the coordinator said. Offensive tackle Michael Munoz will be withheld from the scrimmage to rest a sore shoulder. Guard Jason Respert, who has missed practice all spring because of shoulder problems, is another offensive lineman who will sit this one out. Senior center Scott Wells will see limited action, as will senior fullback Troy Fleming. In keeping with the physical nature of spring drills, defensive coordinator John Chavis indicated that he will leave his first-team defense on the field for much of Saturday's scrimmage. ''We're going to play the first group together as long as we can,'' he said. ''The group we're going to call the first group in the Orange & White game ... hopefully, they'll play all the way.'' The ''first group'' is believed to consist of ends Karlton Neal and Parys Haralson, tackles Mondre Dickerson and Greg Jones, linebackers Jason Mitchell, Marvin Mitchell and Omar Gaither, defensive backs Antwan Stewart, Jason Allen, Gibril Wilson and O.J. Owens. Chavis said end Jason Hall and linebacker Jon Poe may also get some work with the first group. ''We want it to be a competitive situation,'' he said. ''This is an opportunity for them to show what they can do and show the progress they've made in spring practice.''
