Derek Dooley and the Tennessee coaching staff haven't had much luck recruiting in the city of Memphis this year, but one prospect is coming their way.

Cameron Mayfield has decided he will make the trip across the state to camp with Dooley and the Vols this month.

"Coach Dooley wrote me a letter about two weeks ago telling me to come down there.

"I am just looking forward to the competitive environment of camp and getting to know the coaches," said Mayfield, who has offers from three Division I schools.

Offers have come from Southern Mississippi, Arkansas State and Arkansas Pine Bluff. Along with his three offers the Tennessee native has received interest from Arkansas, Kentucky, MTSU and Tennessee.

The 6-foot-1, 175-pound prospect is being recruited at both safety and quarterback. Derek Dooley has not yet specified what position the Vols would be interested in.

Mayfield missed the Vols spring game in 2011, but he was able to take in the sites during a Vols game this past season.

"I went to the Alabama and Tennessee game. It was a great experience. I loved the atmosphere and the fans.

"I have always been a Tennessee fan. I even went to Vanderbilt last month and I didn't like Vanderbilt," said Mayfield, who recently posted a 40-yard-dash time of 4.6 in Cleveland, Oh.

And it's not all about football for this long-time Tennessee fan.

"I am trying to go to school for good academics. It is not all about football to me. I want to play, but the main thing is going and getting my education on scholarship."

Mayfield helped lead the Trezevant Bears to the Class 4A Tennessee high school football championship game where they fell to Greenville High School. Mayfield posted 1,414 total yards and 27 touchdowns in his junior season.
