Vols looking at JUCO runner

Marion Grice

Are the Volunteers done at running back in their 2012 class? Read as InsideTennessee.com tell you all about a certain JUCO running back that Tennessee might be after.

Derek Dooley and the Tennessee coaching staff may be looking to replace recently departed running back Toney Williams and eventual departure senior Tauren Poole. How can they do that? Bring in a new horse via the 2012 recruiting class.

Much speculation has been made of whether Tennessee commitment Imani Cross is truly in the fold or if his looking around makes him less of a priority for Dooley.

One runner that has a Tennessee offer, JUCO prospect Marion Grice, really likes what the Vols have to offer.

"I like the program and what they have offered me," Grice told InsideTennessee.com.

Grice attends Blinn College, who have won NJCAA championship four times, most recently in 2009 when they were led by 2010 Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton.

Blinn College is coming off an 8-3 season, highlighted by a 31-27 victory over Arizona Western College in the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl and No. 10 final season ranking.

As a freshman, Grice earned All-Southwest Junior College Conference after rushing for over 1,169 yards and 17 touchdowns.

The Texas native boasts offers from Tennessee, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Baylor, TCU, Arizona and Arizona State, but lists no favorites.

Before being offered by the Vols the 6-foot-1, 205-pound prospect knew very little about Tennessee.

"I have never really seen them play," Grice said. "I have seen highlights of them though. Once they offered me I went on their website and watched a bunch of highlights."

Grice hopes to speak with Tennessee coaches soon in order to plan an official visit to see the Volunteer campus. Until then, Grice is working on improving his game.

"I have been working hard on my speed and pass blocking," he said.

Blinn begins the season Aug. 25 ranked No. 4 in the NJCAA preseason poll.
