Disappointing news came out of Kansas City today concerning one of the more prolific Tennessee Volunteers this century.

According to with the network, Kansas City Chiefs star free safety Eric Berry is out for the year with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, according to multiple reports confirmed by a league source.

Berry, who was a Pro Bowler in 2010, got hurt early in the game on a block the Chiefs and Berry are upset about.

The former University of Tennessee standout was drafted fifth overall in the first round last year and was an instant impact player. He started every game and immediately provided a boost to the Chiefs' defense.

This is a major blow to the AFC West franchise to absorb on top of its blowout loss to the Buffalo Bills to open the season.

The 6-foot, 211-pounder played in all 16 games as a rookie for the Chiefs, totaling 92 tackles and four interceptions with 102 return yards, including a touchdown.

The 22-year-old racked up 241 tackles and 14 interceptions in three seasons as a Volunteer. He owns the school record for interception return yardage with 494 yards and three scores.
