With their backs against the wall, the Tennessee Lady Vol softball team came out swinging to the tune of 16 runs on 23 hits and shut out their two Saturday opponents over 11 innings to keep their season alive.
After dispatching UAB earlier in the day, the Lady Vols downed Miami (Ohio) 8-0 in further NCAA Knoxville Regional tournament play at Lee Stadium in the losers' bracket.
Tennessee (48-11) advances to play Virginia Tech (42-19) on Sunday at 1:30 EST with the "if" game coming at 4.
The Nos. 2-4 hitters for the Big Orange — Kat Dotson, Madison Shipman and Lauren Gibson — combined for six hits, five runs scored and three RBIs.
Ivy Renfroe relieved her sister Ellen Renfroe with one down in the second inning and twirled 4 2/3 frames of shutout softball, striking out seven with no walks and just five hits allowed.
Losing pitcher Jessica Simpson totaled four Ks and didn't issue a base on balls. Kirstie Fehrenbach had two of Miami's five hits.
Tennessee 8, UAB 0: In the Lady Vols' first game Saturday, they scored in four of its five trips to the plate en route to a run-rule victory over the Blazers.
Shelby Burchell led the 10-hit attack by the Lady Volunteers (47-11) with a double, two singles and two runs scored. Raven Chavanne contributed two hits, two runs and two RBIs. Dotson drove in a pair.
Ellen Renfroe started on the bump, going 1 2/3 of shutout ball before being relieved by sister teammate Ivy Renfroe, who no-hit the Blazers over the last 3 1/3.
The season concludes for UAB with a final record 37-22. Amber Torres was the losing pitcher. Mandy Lowman had their lone hit.
