Martinez Making His Own Name

Drake Martinez

The Laguna Beach (Calif.) athlete, Drake Martinez, the younger brother of Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez, is showing he is a big time prospect in his own right...

Laguna Beach (Calif.) athlete Drake Martinez (6-2, 196) played a huge part in the Breakers 35-28 win over Costa Mesa (Calif.) last Thursday, scoring three touchdowns, and rushing for 148 yards.

Martinez, who is being recruited by Nebraska, Oregon, Purdue, Stanford, Tennessee and USC, took his official visit to Nebraska on October 27th.

"It was really cool," saaid Martinez. "I got to meet up with my brother and meet teammates and some coaches"

His brother, Taylor, is the current starting quarterback at Nebraska and was his host during his visit.

Although it may seem that Drake may follow in his footsteps, he is keeping his options open.

"It would be awesome to play with Taylor, but I would only get to play with him for one year so I'm not going make my decision for wherever my brothers at. I'm just going to make a decision on where I think its best for me."

As far as other visits go, Martinez has one more in the works.

"I am planning to visit Tennessee, the date isn't set yet but sometime soon."

Martinez stellar performances have helped the Breakers to a so-far undefeated season. Including school record-breaking five touchdowns in the first game of the season and another with four touchdowns in which he rushed for 334 yards in 17 carries.

His speed, agility and smarts on both sides of the ball make him a versatile player, capable of playing running back, receiver, safety, linebacker and, pending his growth, defensive end at the college level.

Martinez, however, is all about defense.

"I definitely like playing defense better, I'm more of a hitter than a runner."

As of right now, Martinez will continue to play both sides of the ball in hopes to lead his team through the CIF Finals. With the regular season now over, the Breakers will play Anaheim (Calif.) Loara High School this Friday at 7 pm at home to kick off the CIF Playoffs.
