IT picks the SEC

Posted Dec 31, 2012

InsideTennessee's coverage of SEC football doesn't end when the Vols' season ends. Check out our staff picks for bowl games involving league teams:

Tennessee missed the bowl season this year but nine SEC teams will be playing post-season games. Included is Alabama, which is attempting to give the SEC a seventh consecutive BCS national title.

Danny Parker won the IT staff regular-season title with an SEC picks record of 96-15. Publisher Josh Woodward closed with a 9-0 mark on the final regular-season weekend to finish second at 93-18. Randy Moore was third at 92-19 and Chris Price fourth at 91-20.

Here are the staff picks for the bowl season:

DANNY PARKER (96-15)

MUSIC CITY: Vanderbilt (8-4) versus N.C. State (7-5): One school going through a coaching change versus one high on confidence. Vanderbilt, 27-17.

CHICK FIL-A: LSU (10-2) versus Clemson (10-2): Hard to believe LSU is not in the BCS picture. Bad news for Clemson. LSU, 31-13.

JAN. 1

GATOR: Miss. State (8-4) versus Northwestern (9-3): The toughest pick of the SEC slate. Northwestern, 34-30.

CAPITAL ONE: Georgia (11-2) versus Nebraska (10-3): Anybody who watched the conference championships can't possibly pick the Huskers in this one. Georgia, 56-20.

OUTBACK: South Carolina (10-2) versus Michigan (8-4): The Gamecocks didn't miss a beat without Lattimore and Shaw against Clemson. Defense wins tight ones. South Carolina, 30-22.

JAN. 2

SUGAR: Florida (11-1) versus Louisville (10-2): This one has the interest of Tennessee fans for one reason in particular. Hmmm....wonder why? Florida, 49-9.

JAN. 4

COTTON: Texas A&M (10-2) versus Oklahoma (10-2): Behind Johnny Football, the Aggies run all over the most over-rated program in BCS football. Texas A&M, 42-17.

JAN 5

COMPASS: Ole Miss (6-6) versus Pittsburgh (6-6): Interesting matchup. I expect this one to be one of the better games of bowl season. Ole Miss, 21-20.

JAN. 7

BCS CHAMPIONSHIP: Alabama (12-1) versus Notre Dame (12-0): All of the pass interference flags in the world aren't going to help the Irish on center stage. Alabama, 35-10.

JOSH WOODWARD (93-18)

DEC. 31

MUSIC CITY: Vanderbilt (8-4) versus N.C. State (7-5): This is a good match up, but I have to go with Vandy. I like their defense over the Wolfpack offense. 35-28 Dores

CHICK FIL-A: LSU (10-2) versus Clemson (10-2): The battle of the Tigers shouldn't even be close. The only problem is LSU has proven to play to the level of their opponent. 34-31 LSU

JAN. 1

GATOR: Miss. State (8-4) versus Northwestern (9-3):This is the one game I see the SEC losing, Northwestern will come ready to play and Miss. St has been on a downward spiral since October. 34-24 Northwestern

CAPITAL ONE: Georgia (11-2) versus Nebraska (10-3): Could be one of the better bowl games this year. I like Nebraska's defense, but I think Georgia can expose Nebraska with the run game. 42-28 Bulldogs

OUTBACK: South Carolina (10-2) versus Michigan (8-4): South Carolina has won all year on defense, it won't be any different this game. 35-17 Gamecocks

JAN. 2

SUGAR: Florida (11-1) versus Louisville (10-2): Most Tennessee fans will be rooting for the Gators after the Charlie Strong snub. I believe the Gators will roll. 44-21 Gators

JAN. 4

COTTON: Texas A&M (10-2) versus Oklahoma (10-2): One of the better games this bowl season, like the Aggies in this one. 45-41 A&M

JAN 5

COMPASS: Ole Miss (6-6) versus Pittsburgh (6-6): Hugh Freeze should get coach of the year with what he has accomplished at Ole Miss. This is why I'm picking the Rebels. 35-30 Ole Miss

JAN. 7

BCS CHAMPIONSHIP: Alabama (12-1) versus Notre Dame (12-0): all signs point to Alabama, the luck of the Irish will run out in this game. 44-24 Bama

RANDY MOORE (92-19)

DEC. 31

MUSIC CITY: Vanderbilt (8-4) versus N.C. State (7-5): Tennessee beat one handily and got waxed by the other. The Commodores can't be ecstatic about playing a bowl game inside the city limits but they'll be excited enough. Vandy, 31-20.

CHICK FIL-A: LSU (10-2) versus Clemson (10-2): I said before the season that LSU would win the national title this year. I meant to say LSU would win the Chick fil-A Bowl title this year. LSU, 35-21

JAN. 1

GATOR: Miss. State (8-4) versus Northwestern (9-3): What can I say? I'm an SEC sheep. Bulldogs, 27-20

CAPITAL ONE: Georgia (11-2) versus Nebraska (10-3): Unless the Dawgs are flat after just missing the BCS title game, they should roll. Georgia, 42-21

OUTBACK: South Carolina (10-2) versus Michigan (8-4): Let's see ... a 10-2 SEC team versus an 8-4 Big Ten team. No brainer: Gamecocks, 31-14

JAN. 2

SUGAR: Florida (11-1) versus Louisville (10-2): Although he declined the Tennessee job, Charlie Strong gets the "Tennessee experience" of losing big to the Gators. Florida, 38-17

JAN. 4

COTTON: Texas A&M (10-2) versus Oklahoma (10-2): How can you pick against Johnny Football? Aggies, 35-24

JAN 5

COMPASS: Ole Miss (6-6) versus Pittsburgh (6-6): Santino Sunseri plays quarterback for the Panthers. I'm guessing that's because his dad taught him how to play defense. Rebels, 34-28

JAN. 7

BCS CHAMPIONSHIP: Alabama (12-1) versus Notre Dame (12-0): The Fighting Irish have never seen this kind of speed before. Tide, 31-13

CHRIS PRICE (91-20)

DEC. 31

MUSIC CITY: Vanderbilt (8-4) versus N.C. State (7-5): N.C. State was exposed by a Tennessee team that is home for the holidays. Enough said. Vandy, 31-17.

CHICK FIL-A: LSU (10-2) versus Clemson (10-2): LSU is a far better team. 10-2 in the SEC is saying a whole lot more than Clemson's 10-2. LSU 24-10.

JAN. 1

GATOR: Miss. State (8-4) versus Northwestern (9-3): Mississippi State will rout Northwestern. Their 9-3 record just reflects how terrible the BIG10 was this year. Bulldogs 31-17.

CAPITAL ONE: Georgia (11-2) versus Nebraska (10-3): This one is a bit tough. Don't think Georgia is as good at their record, but still think they are better than the Huskers. Dawgs 41-21.

OUTBACK: South Carolina (10-2) versus Michigan (8-4): I like Carolina, but I think Michigan takes this one with Shoelace at the helm. 38-21.

JAN. 2

SUGAR: Florida (11-1) versus Louisville (10-2): Florida will murder Louisville much to the pleasure of Tennessee fans. Gators 48-17.

JAN. 4

COTTON: Texas A&M (10-2) versus Oklahoma (10-2): Best game on the post-season slate. Johnny Football performs like a Heisman winner once again. Aggies, 34-20.

JAN 5

COMPASS: Ole Miss (6-6) versus Pittsburgh (6-6): Ole Miss is better than their record shows. Rebels 42-21.

JAN. 7

BCS CHAMPIONSHIP: Alabama (12-1) versus Notre Dame (12-0): Alabama is just a better football team. A&M was the exception not the rule. Tide 24-20.
