Tennessee (14-3, 5-0) managed to stay undefeated in league play with the win over Auburn (13-5, 2-3), but the Lady Vols had to overcome anemic post scoring and 10 turnovers from its starting backcourt to steal the road win over the Tigers.
The Lady Vols found enough defense in the end - led by freshman Jasmine Jones pressuring point guard Najat Ouardad - and a outpouring of offense from Meighan Simmons to finally overtake the Tigers at Aubun Arena before 3,312 fans, most of whom were hoping for the upset.
Simmons got scoring help from Taber Spani, who tallied 12 points and was a perfect 3-3 from the line, and Ariel Massengale, who tallied 11 points and was a perfect 2-2 from the arc.
The Lady Vols were down 22-19 on the boards at halftime but edged the Tigers overall 37-33.
Blanche Alverson and Hasina Muhammad scored 15 points each for Auburn - all five starters were in double figures -while Tyrese Tanner and Peyton Davis added 10 each and Ouardad chipped in with 11, most of those on forays into the paint by the 5'1 point guard.
The Lady Vols will stay overnight in Auburn because of inclement weather in Knoxville. Tennessee will return home Friday and will host Alabama on Sunday for its "We Back Pat" game at Thompson-Boling Arena.
