Approximately 72 hours after the surprising exit of former Volunteer turned running backs coach Jay Graham, head coach Butch Jones has filled the void on his coaching staff.

West Virginia running backs coach Robert Gillespie will join the Tennessee coaching staff a little more than a week before spring practice is slotted to open on March 9.

A former four-year letter winner with the Florida Gators under head coach Steve Spurrier, Gillespie rushed for 1,854 yards while becoming the second all-time Gator running back in career receptions (96) and receiving yards (1,091).

After his playing career with the Gators, Gillespie was a undrafted free agent signee with the Washington Redskins in 2002 before moving on to the Frankfurt Galaxy in the NFL Europe in 2003.

Following his playing career Gillespie joined the South Carolina coaching staff under his former head coach as a graduate assistant after finishing his degree in 2005. He spent one season as a graduate assistant before being promoted to full-time running backs coach and served in that role until 2008.

Following his time with the Gamecocks, Gillespie moved on to Oklahoma State from 2009-10 before heading to West Virginia. During his time in Morgantown, he coached freshman Dustin Garrison, who earned East Coast Athletic Conference Offensive Rookie of the Year Award.

He also coached All-American running back Kendall Hunter during his time with Oklahoma State in 2010.

The 33-year old Florida grad is married to wife Crystal and has one daughter, Nola. The 2013 season will mark his seventh season of coaching.
