Approximately 24 hours after the finishing touches were put on the nation's No. rated recruiting Class of 2005, the Vols added another piece to the Class of 2006 with word that Knoxville Powell tight end/defensive end Lee Smith would join the Big Orange.

Smith’s commitment is a case of back to the future as his father Daryle Smith was the starting left tackle for Tennessee’s 1985 SEC Championship team which beat Miami 35-7 in the Sugar Bowl and finished No. 4 with a 9-1-2 record. He also started on the 1986 team and signed with the Dallas Cowboys as a free agent in 1987 where he played two seasons. He played with the Browns in 1989 and the Philadelphia Eagles from 1990-92 before completing his professional playing career with a four-year stint in the Canadian Football League. Phillip Fulmer was his position coach at UT.

Lee Smith, 6-foot-4, 245 pounds, had a standout junior season on both sides of the ball for Powell, catching six TD passes at tight end and becoming an accomplished pass rusher. He had attracted early interest from several SEC schools including Auburn, Alabama and South Carolina.

Smith is the second in-state player to commit to the Vols for 2006, joining Chattanooga Baylor offensive lineman Jacques McClendon, 6-foot-4, 320 pounds. Smith helped lead a resurgence at Powell along with six players who signed football scholarships on Wednesday. One of those players was Zane Bruhin who signed with Marshall. He is the son of former Vol offensive lineman John Bruhin who played in the line with Daryle Smith. He was drafted in the fourth round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where he played until 1991.
