ennessee lost the services of versatile athlete Mario Fannin of Lovejoy, Ga., who announced his intentions to attend Auburn today.

The Vols were considered Fannin’s favorite a month ago and many figured he would follow former high school teammates Anthony Parker and Chris Scott to Knoxville. However Fannin backed off listing UT as his favorite after camping at Auburn last month. It is believed the Tigers’ staff was recruiting the 5-foot-11, 207-pound Fannin as a running back or quarterback while Tennessee was looking at him as a defensive back.

He played primarily QB at Lovejoy High School last season and wanted to have a shot at that position in college, or a have a chance to carry the football. Auburn’s offensive system better accommodated a signal caller of his talents while UT’s pro style offense requires a drop-back passer with greater height.

“I like Auburn’s offensive scheme,” he told Mark Murphy of Inside Auburn Tigers. “I love the backs they have and the receivers they have. That played a major part in my decision.”

Interestingly, Auburn committed a quarterback on Monday, Neil Caudle, and a running back on Tuesday, Benjamin Tate, of Snow Hill High in Maryland.

Fannin rushed for over 1,000 yards and passed for over 1,000 yards last season at Lovejoy. He has 4.59 speed and a 35-inch vertical leap.
