True to his word: Connor Smith announced his choice of colleges at the end of July and, in keeping with popular speculation, his choice was Ohio State, effectively ending UT’s chase of the highly regarded Cincinnati O-lineman.

Smith revealed his decision to, confirming Ohio State, where his father and head coach, Joe Smith, played his college ball, was always the team to beat.

“I made my decision today,” he told Bucknuts David Biddle. “I called (OSU head coach Jim) Tressel up this morning after church and I committed to Ohio State.

“Back in February when Ohio State offered me, I really wanted to commit then. But both my parents have been very supportive of me and they said you need to take your time. It’s been my dream since I was old enough to understand football – just watching on TV – it’s been my dream since I was a little kid to play for the Buckeyes. But my parents told me to explore my avenues to make sure I wasn’t missing out on anything.”

Tennessee was one of the avenues he considered, taking an unofficial visit to Knoxville earlier this month. He also considered Florida, LSU, Michigan and Oklahoma, as he spent the summer touring campuses in addition to preparing for his senior season.

Rated the No. 5 offensive lineman in the nation by, Connor Smith, 6-5, 295, led Colerain High to a 15-0 record in 2004 amassing an amazing 310 knockdown blocks.

Tennessee’s attention turns to several other topnotch O-line prospects including No. 1 rated Andre Smith of Birmingham, No. 17 Aaron Brown, of Cincinnati Prince High School and No. 18 Ramone Johnson of Morgan Park High School in Chicago.
