Monday practice report

Posted Aug 8, 2005

Tennessee is nearing the end of its five-day acclimation period after another long session Monday afternoon at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

Head coach Phillip Fulmer put the Vols through their fourth strenuous workout in as many days. Four practices are in the books and all without pads per NCAA preseason guidelines.

"Back before the world changed, you would just be going into your second day," Fulmer said of the way things were prior to NCAA-mandated alterations. Those changes about the start of fall camp came into fruition in 2004.

"We've been out here pretty long each day. I don't know which way I like better."

Fulmer says he welcomes full pads, although Tuesday's practice also will be considered an acclimation day without full contact.

"We're looking forward to full pads because I've always said football is played that way. We've gotten a lot of good work done in shorts and shoulder pads and have basically done everything but tackling. We'll look at this film; it should make us better."

The Vols coach noted work with the punt team was a Monday highlight.

"We're hitting the ball -- the kicker and the punter -- pretty well right now."

Tennessee's first of two two-a-days is Wednesday, with the initial scrimmage scheduled for Saturday at Neyland Stadium. The Vols have three full scrimmages and a kicking scrimmage on their fall camp schedule.
