Street & Smith’s Pro Football Draft Guide rates Jason Allen the seventh-best safety prospect available this year and projects him to be the third-round pick of the Miami Dolphins. If so, Allen would be the 82nd player selected.
Allen also was projected as a third-round pick by ESPN’s Draft Guide and The Sporting News Draft Guide. Allen was projected as a first-round prospect before a dislocated hip midway through the 2005 season curtailed his senior year at UT.
Street & Smith projects three more Vols to be chosen in Round 4 – Parys Haralson, Jesse Mahelona and Gerald Riggs.
Haralson is ranked No. 16 among defensive ends and is projected to go to the San Francisco 49ers as the 99th pick. Mahelona is rated No. 7 at defensive tackle and pegged for pick No. 108 to the St. Louis Rams. Riggs is rated No. 15 at tailback and projected to join the Philadelphia Eagles with pick No. 126.
Rob Smith, who elected to bypass his senior year with the Vols, is rated No. 11 among guard prospects and pegged to go in Round 5. Street & Smith sees him being selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars with pick No. 155.
Albert Toeaina is rated No. 15 among offensive tackles and projected as a sixth-round selection. S & S has Buffalo making him the Draft’s 169th selection.
Omar Gaither is tabbed No. 13 among outside linebackers and projected to be called by the Tennessee Titans with pick No. 222 in Round 7.
Former Vol Cody Douglas is ranked No. 18 among guards but is not projected as a draftee.
Kevin Simon is nowhere to be found in the rankings at either inside or outside linebacker. That probably is due to his recent history of knee problems. Wide receiver Chris Hannon also is overlooked.
