Fulmer dismisses Henderson

Posted May 3, 2006

Timing is everything. And Raymond Henderson’s timing has cost him a spot on the University of Tennessee football team.

Henderson, a redshirt freshman defensive lineman from Oak Creek, Wisc., made a mistake in judgment around the same time Vol teammate Marvin Mitchell was arrested for disorderly conduct. Head coach Phillip Fulmer, still fuming from the Mitchell incident, promptly dismissed Henderson from the team. Mitchell got off a little easier. He’s suspended indefinitely but still on the team.

Mitchell created a disturbance at a campus-area convenience market at 3:30 a.m. Monday. During a team meeting on Monday night, Fulmer reportedly launched into a tirade that included throwing water bottles. Part of the head man’s rage was directed at Henderson for what Fulmer termed an “inappropriate” encounter with a woman and her daughter in a restaurant.

Henderson was not arrested but Fulmer found the incident disturbing enough to warrant dismissal. Henderson reportedly has been in Fulmer’s doghouse twice before.

“I’m not putting up with any more of these type things, and I’ve made that as clear to the players as I possibly can,” Fulmer told The Tennessean. “The sad thing is that it’s just a few guys embarrassing us. But we’re not going to tolerate any of it.”

Fulmer said Mitchell will remain suspended until he meets specific requirements for reinstatement. Mitchell also may be withheld from several games as part of his punishment.

“If he doesn’t do what he’s supposed to, then he won’t be with us,” Fulmer said. “He’s got to make better decisions than he did the other night.”

Henderson was a heralded prep standout who played in the 2004 U.S. Army All-America Game. He redshirted last season, then worked at both end and tackle during spring drills.
