Tennessee contributed a few good men, such as Davy Crockett and Sam Houston, to the Texas Revolution 170 years ago, and 90 years later, Texas returned the favor in the form of General Robert R. Neyland, who can fairly be called the founding father of Volunteer football.

Over the ensuing years UT produced noteworthy NFL players such as Steve Kiner, Robert Shaw, Bill Bates, Alvin Harper, Jason Witten and Kevin Burnett who went on to play for Dallas. In fact, the Cowboys even signed or drafted three former Vol basketball players in Ron Widby, Bill Justus and Larry Robinson.
