Sunday truly was a day of rest for draft-eligible University of Tennessee football players. After five ex-Vols were picked Saturday on Day 1 of the NFL Draft, UT had just one player selected on Day 2.

Middle linebacker Marvin Mitchell was chosen by the New Orleans Saints with selection 10 in Round 7, the 220th pick overall. The Saints had picked ex-Vol receiver Robert Meachem in Round 1 one day earlier.

Mitchell, a fifth-year senior from Norfolk, Va., led the 2006 Vols in tackles (104), tackles for loss (10.5) and fumbles forced (2). He recorded just one sack last fall but ranked second on the team in hurries with 11. He also registered four pass breakups and an interception that he returned 17 yards. Mitchell's first four years at Tennessee were wrecked by an assortment of injuries.

Here's what former Dallas Cowboy personnel director Gil Brandt had to say about Mitchell on the NFL.com website:

“He's a 6-3, 249-pound linebacker from Tennessee who ran a 4.87. He's projected to play outside after playing inside in college. All these linebackers picked now (late rounds) have skills to play on special teams.”

Two Tennessee players were picked in Round 1 on Saturday – defensive tackle Justin Harrell (pick 16) by the Green Bay Packers and Meachem (pick 27) by the Saints.

Two more Vols were chosen in Round 2 – offensive lineman Arron Sears (pick 35) and defensive lineman Turk McBride (pick 54). Sears was scooped up by the Tampa Bay Bucs, while McBride was taken by the Kansas City Chiefs.

The final UT player to be selected on Day 1 was cornerback Jonathan Wade. The speedy cornerback was taken in Round 3 by St. Louis with the 84th overall pick.

Several draft-eligible Vols were not selected – wide receivers Jayson Swain and Bret Smith, kicker James Wilhoit, fullback Cory Anderson and safety Antwan Stewart.

Other noteworthy SEC players who were not selected included Florida quarterback Chris Leak, Florida linebacker Earl Everett, Florida cornerback Reggie Lewis, Alabama linebacker Juwan Simpson, Alabama defensive tackle Jeremy Clark, Auburn guard Tim Duckworth, Auburn punter Kody Bliss, Georgia linebacker Tony Taylor, South Carolina running back/receiver Syvelle Newton, Ole Miss linebacker Rory Johnson and Arkansas linebacker Sam Olajubutu.

Alabama cornerback Ramzee Robinson earned the title “Mr. Irrelevant” by being the final player selected. He was drafted by the Detroit Lions with pick No. 255.
