What follows is a quarter-by-quarter breakdown of Tennessee's 25-24 defeat of Vanderbilt Saturday at Neyland Stadium:

The Tennessee Vols took the opening kickoff and marched 75 yards in seven plays to take a 6-0 lead, the score coming on a six-yard toss from Erik Ainge to Lucas Taylor. Daniel Lincoln's PAT was blocked, however, and he subsequently bounced a 41-yard field goal try off the right upright.
KEY PLAY

On fourth-and-inches at the Vanderbilt 30-yard line, Ainge burrowed into a mass of humanity. He advanced the ball just six inches but he only needed three. UT went up 6-0 three plays later.

KEY PLAYER

Ainge. His four incompletions were ugly but he still completed 11 of 15 throws for 89 yards and a TD in the quarter.

KEY STAT

Tennessee outgained Vandy 120 yards to 48.

Vandy used 17 plays on a 78-yard drive that consumed 9:02 of clock time and resulted in a five-yard TD toss from Mackenzi Adams to Brad Allen. The PAT put the Dores on top 7-6. A 34-yard field goal by Lincoln gave Tennessee a 9-7 lead but A 19-yard TD pass from Adams to Jeff Jennings gave Vandy a 14-9 lead with just 47 seconds left to halftime. The Commodores weren't done, though. Linebacker Patrick Benoist scooped up an Ainge lateral and returned it 10 yards to the Vol 16-yard line, setting up a 33-yard Bryan Hahnfeldt field goal that gave the visitors a 17-9 halftime lead.
KEY PLAY

Ainge's lateral. With no one open downfield, he started to throw the ball away. Then, spotting tight end Chris Brown in the left flat, Ainge rifled a throw that bounded off Brown's shoulder pads and was picked up by Benoist. The three points Vandy got were truly a gift.

KEY PLAYER

Adams. The Vandy quarterback was 5 of 10 passing for 55 yards and two touchdowns in the period. He also rushed twice for 10 yards.

KEY STAT

The Commodores kept the ball for 10:05 of the period, UT just 4:55.

Vandy took the second-half kickoff and went 75 yards in 11 plays. A one-yard TD toss from Adams to George Smith padded the Commodore lead to 24-9. The Vols appeared to be in deep trouble as the quarter neared its end. Broderick Stewart was called for a roughing-the-punter penalty after colliding with UT's Britton Colquitt, however, extending a drive that would produce a UT touchdown six plays later.
KEY PLAY

The roughing-the-kicker call. That shifted the momentum and basically resurrected Tennessee's chances of victory.

KEY PLAYER

Adams again. The Vandy quarterback completed just three of four passes but they produced 41 yards and another TD.

KEY STAT

Vandy converted on four of five third-down tries during the quarter.

Ainge completed a seven-yard TD pass to Josh Briscoe on the second play of the quarter, concluding the drive that was extended by the roughing-the-punter call near the end of the third period. The PAT narrowed the gap to 24-16 with 14:45 remaining. After a three-and-out by each team, Tennessee went 83 yards in 10 plays (the last nine of them passes) to pull within 24-22. The march ended with Ainge throwing a five-yard TD pass to Austin Rogers but a two-point conversion pass fell incomplete with 7:14 to go. Tennessee forced a third consecutive three-and-out, and Dennis Rogan returned Vandy's punt 45 yards to the Commodore 33-yard line. The drive stalled at the 16 but Lincoln booted a 33-yard field goal that put Tennessee on top 25-24 with 2:46 left. Vandy's D.J. Moore returned the ensuing kickoff 55 yards to the Vol 42 and would've scored if not for a TD-saving stop by Rogan. Hahnfeldt missed a potential game-winning 49-yard field goal with 33 seconds left, as Tennessee survived the upset bid.
KEY PLAY

Rogan's return. It ignited the Vols and their crowd, in addition to putting Tennessee in position for Lincoln's game-winning field goal.

KEY PLAYER

Rogan. As noted earlier, he made a touchdown-saving stop on D.J. Moore's return mere moments after making his own 45-yard kickoff return.

KEY STAT

Tennessee limited Vanderbilt to 16 yards of total offense in the final quarter.
