Two Vols change positions

Tennessee's first pair of two-a-day practices is in the books after morning and afternoon workouts Tuesday at Haslam Field. The Vols practiced two hours each session and now have completed 11 dates of their preseason camp.

It's a timetable the Vols head coach likes thus far.

"This is the best thing as far as the schedule," Fulmer said. "Every team is on the same schedule with the same number of practices. The two practices we have of two-a-days are a good gut-check for us.

"We're just not cramped. I can't believe we used to do it the way we did it when it was so hard on them physically. The balance to that is getting all the things done fundamentally you want done."

Back when Fulmer manned the UT offensive line, collegiate squads would nearly always open camp with 10 or so consecutive days of two-a-day practices.

Fulmer announced Tuesday morning that freshman Rod Wilks of Smyrna was making his second move in as many weeks, this time from the safety position to strong-side linebacker.

"He certainly could go back to safety and he could go back to offense, but he's a good athlete and we think he can help us, at least on special teams. And with two senior linebackers in front of him, this starts the process of teaching him how to play that position."

The Vols also moved another newcomer, Nashville's Ben Bartholomew, from linebacker to tight end and H-back.

"Both of them looked good out there this morning. We'll continue to shuffle around and do what we need to do to get the best guys on the field and available to get in the mix."
