Fulmer applauds effort, rips miscues
Coach Phillip Fulmer

Posted Sep 3, 2008

Tennessee returned to the practice field Wednesday afternoon, working to correct crucial mistakes that cost the Vols a 27-24 overtime decision Monday night at UCLA.

UT scored just seven points in the first half after intercepting four Bruins passes, the lone touchdown coming on Nevin McKenzie’s pick-six just 23 seconds before intermission. In the second half, Tennessee lost a fumble, threw an interception, allowed two late scoring drives of 70-plus yards and missed a 34-yard field goal in overtime.

“Those kinds of things will get you beat,” head coach Phillip Fulmer said of the team’s miscues. “One or two of them will get you beat in a close ballgame and we had way too many of them.

“The guys gave great effort offensively, defensively and in the kicking game, but we just made some really bad mistakes -- more mistakes than I choose to live with. It’s just unacceptable and it’s not all right. I don’t expect our team to think it’s all right. We corrected some of those mental things today and as we go along, I hope we’ve learned some great lessons about how you have to play to win a football game.”

Tennessee’s next chance for success is one week from Saturday when UAB visits Neyland Stadium for the 2008 home opener. Kickoff on Sept. 13 is set for 12:30 p.m. Eastern time, with the Vol Network and Raycom Sports providing the radio and television coverage.
