Lesson learned?
UT Coach John Chavis

Posted Sep 7, 2008

Nothing could be much more frustrating than to dominate an opposing offense for 49 minutes, then surrender two long touchdown drives in the final 11 minutes of regulation.

That's what happened to Tennessee's defense in last Monday night's 27-24 overtime loss at UCLA, which is why no one is more frustrated these days than Vol defensive coordinator John Chavis.

So, how does he cope with the frustration?

“You put what's happened behind you after you learn from it,” he said. “Certainly, there's some lessons – some good lessons – to be learned from it. You've got to be hungry and you've got to take it one day at a time.”

UCLA exposed some weaknesses in Tennessee's defense during the final 11 minutes of regulation Monday night – weaknesses that Florida (Sept. 20), Auburn (Sept. 27) and Georgia (Oct. 11) will exploit in a big way if they aren't repaired in short order.

Chavis isn't worried about the Gators, Tigers or Bulldogs, however. He's looking no further than this Saturday's home opener.

“I'm not looking anywhere past UAB,” he said. “That's my focus right now. We need to get out and play as good as we can.”
