Fulmer not ready to panic

Posted Oct 8, 2008

Tennessee head coach Phillip Fulmer knows his Vols have a chance this weekend to jump back into the SEC Eastern Division picture. He’s seen it all before.

“Usually you can look at the past and know what’s coming in the future,” said Fulmer, who is vying for his 150th career coaching victory Saturday at Georgia. “Our teams have always been teams that have fought through a lot of pride, effort and commitment to get back where we want to be. This team, to its credit, has not lost its spirit whatsoever.

“They have come to practice and worked, and there is nothing wrong with this team at all that a good win would not fix.”

That victory could come Saturday in Athens, where the Vols have won their last two encounters against Georgia and six of their last eight at Sanford Stadium. Tennessee enters the game 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the SEC, while Georgia stands 4-1 and 1-1. Vanderbilt (3-0) is the only Eastern Division team without a conference loss.

Wednesday, Tennessee practiced just shy of two hours inside the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center.

“We’ve had our two biggest days of the week in our preparation and the guys have been really focused,” Fulmer said. “They have been really concentrating and serious about their business, which obviously we should be. We’re certainly going to give it our very best shot to get turned around this weekend.”

Kickoff on the Vol Network and CBS begins at 3:30 p.m. Eastern time.
