It took two attempts for one Illinois High School football prospects before he finally achieved what he sat out to do a couple of months ago.

Matt Milton, one of the top wide receivers in the country, loaded up in the car with his father and headed to Knoxville for the Vols spring football game. His father became sick and they turned around after a hour into the trip and returned home. Milton’s desire to experience Rocky Top wouldn’t diminish.

He and his father left Friday night from their Illinois home and arrived just in time for the beginning of the Vols camp on Saturday morning.

“As soon as I got there, I got out of the car, got my stuff on and start stretching,” Milton told InsideTennessee.com via cell phone as he drove back home. “Despite all the trouble we had getting there, it was well worth it.”

Milton was named the Wide Receiver MVP for Saturday’s camp and the Vols left a big impression with the standout athlete.

“I’m so glad we didn’t give up and that we finally made it to Knoxville,” Milton said. “I love everything about the school. The coaching staff is incredible, the campus is beautiful.”

After participating in the camp, Milton got a tour around the campus.

“We took a golf cart tour of everything,” Milton said. “The stadium is incredible.”

Milton, who has offers from numerous top schools, is being pursued the hardest by the Vols followed by Washington, Iowa, Missouri, Stanford and Illinois.

Where does the Vols stack up with those schools.

“After this visit, Tennessee is up there at the top,” Milton explained. “I will make a decision sometime in the early fall.”

One that that intrigues Milton about the University of Tennessee is Head Coach Lane Kiffin and his coaching staff’s experience.

“They know what it takes to get me to the next level,” Milton said. “They have so many coaches with NFL experience. I’ll be honest, one of my main goals is not only to get to the league, but to be prepared to make an impact when I get there. This coaching staff is one of the best in the country, they will have me ready for the league.”

Was all the Milton’s efforts to get to Knoxville worth it?

“Yes sir by far,” Milton said. “For all it took to get here, I would do it over and over again after the end results of the trip. It was a great experience.”
