Alabama linebacker has interest in UT

Recruiting the state of Alabama is old hat for one Tennessee assistant coach.

Lance Thompson the current linebacker coach for the Vols, was coaching and recruiting for the Crimson Tide this time last year.

Lane Kiffin with Thompsons help is making Alabama a priority in recruiting.

One prospect that appears to be on the Vols radar is linebacker LaDarius Owens.

InsideTennessee.com caught up with Owens this week to get his thoughts on the Volunteers. Who was the first college coach to call Owens on Tuesday, the first day allowing college coaches to call senior prospects.

"Actually Mississippi State was the first to call me," Owens admitted. "They called at 12:01 a.m. Monday night. Tennessee called me Tuesday morning about 7:15 a.m. Coach Thompson told me that I was the first prospect he called."

According to Owens, Tennessee is high on his list.

"I'm very interested in their program," Owens said. "I want to see how they play this fall and learn more about their program. I have developed a great relationship with Coach Thompson and several of the Tennessee coaches."

Owens plans on taking an official visit to UT.

"Right now I'm planning on it," Owens said. "We haven't made the arrangements yet."

Owens, ranked as the No. 24 outside linebacker in the country by Scout.com, has offers from Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Arkansas, Clemson, Southern Miss, UAB, Mississippi State and Florida State.

Owens finished his junior season with 92 tackles, 18 sacks and three tackles for loss. Owens was named 6A honorable mention DL by the ASWA. He reports a bench of 285-pounds, squat 485 and has a 36-inch vertical jump.

Owens plans to major in sports medicine and reports a 2.8 core GPA and a 20 ACT.
