When Nu'keese Richardson bolted 41 yards from the "Pahokee Package" on Tennessee's first scrimmage play, the Vols appeared to be off to a great start. The drive fizzled, however, and ended with no points when Daniel Lincoln missed badly on a 39-yard field goal try. Auburn took a 3-0 lead on a 29-yard Wes Byrum field goal, recovered a fumbled snap at UT's 30-yard line and promptly went up 6-0 on a 43-yard Byrum field goal.
KEY PLAY

The fumbled snap. That gave Auburn a really cheap score.

KEY PLAYER

Byrum. In a quarter that featured very little offense, he produced all six points.

KEY STAT

Tennessee mustered just 66 yards and one first down all quarter.

A nine-play, 87-yard Auburn drive ended with an 11-yard touchdown run by Ben Tate that padded the Tiger lead to 13-0. Byrum missed a 46-yard field goal that could've widened the lead further. Tennessee's offense finally sprang to life with 1:30 left to halftime, zipping 71 yards in seven plays for a touchdown. Montario Hardesty got the last 17 yards on a 16-yard burst and a one-yard TD plunge with 28 seconds left to intermission. Lincoln's PAT was blocked.
KEY PLAY

On third and 10 at the Vol 43-yard line Crompton found Luke Stocker in a seam, and the Vol tight end wound up gaining 40 yards to the Auburn 17-yard line. The Vols scored two plays later.

KEY PLAYER

Hardesty. He gained 49 yards on six carries in the quarter and scored the Vol TD.

KEY STAT

After completing just 2 of 8 passes for 9 yards in the first period, Crompton was 11 of 15 for 136 yards in the second period.

Byrum hit an 18-yard field goal that padded the lead to 16-6. UT coach Lane Kiffin decided to "go for it" on a fourth-and-one at the Vol 29 yard-line. The strategy worked as Crompton hit Stocker with a six-yard pass but the drive stalled three plays later and ended with a punt.
KEY PLAY

Ben Tate fumbled at the Vol three-yard line but teammate Darvin Adams recovered. Instead of UT getting possession and momentum, Auburn got a field goal three plays later that extended its lead to 16-6.

KEY PLAYER

Auburn fullback Mario Fannin. He had a 32-yard gain on a double-reverse to spark the Tigers' field-goal drive and had a 17-yard catch on their TD drive.

KEY STAT

Tennessee ran just 14 plays all quarter and gained a paltry 32 yards.

Todd hit Terrell Zachery with a 10-yard TD pass on the fourth play of the quarter, boosting Auburn's lead to 23-6. Tennessee answered with a 7-play, 62-yard TD drive - Hardesty taking a screen pass the final 31 yards. A 27-yard field goal by Lincoln narrowed the gap to 23-16 with 4:19 to play but McCalebb returned the ensuing kickoff 52 yards, and Byrum added a clinching 22-yard field goal with 39 seconds left. UT kept fighting, however, and scored on the game's final play when Crompton hit Denarius Moore with a 32-yard touchdown pass.
KEY PLAY

McCalebb's 52-yard kickoff return. That was a real backbreaker.

KEY PLAYER

Crompton. The Vol quarterback completed 13 of 21 passes for 182 yards in the final period.

KEY STAT

Auburn kept the ball 34:46 to Tennessee's 25:14.
