IT picks the SEC

Posted Nov 27, 2009

Alabama is thankful that it will get another chance to play for the SEC title. Florida is thankful that it still has a chance to go undefeated. And Vanderbilt is probably thankful that its 0-8 SEC season is finished.

Meanwhile, football fans can be thankful this Thanksgiving season that the SEC schedule is going to end with a bang. Alabama and Auburn meet Friday in their annual Iron Bowl bloodletting. Ole Miss and Mississippi State meet Saturday in their annual Egg Bowl struggle. Tennessee and Kentucky collide Saturday in their annual border war. South Carolina, Georgia and Florida play hated in-state non-conference rivals.

Ironically, there are no turkeys on this weekend's league slate ... and that's something else to be thankful for. analyst Randy Moore went 5-1 on last week's SEC picks, while cohort James Bryant went 3-3. Guest picker Dave Hooker of The Knoxville News-Sentinel went 4-2. Dave still leads for the season at 74-15. Randy checks in at 70-19, James at 67-22.

Here are their projections for this week:

Randy's picks

ALABAMA AT AUBURN (FRIDAY): If Auburn had just a little more defense I'd pick the upset here ... but it doesn't. Alabama 27, Auburn 24

CLEMSON AT SOUTH CAROLINA: The Ol' Ball Coach needs this one to snap a three-game skid and finish 7-5. Carolina 24, Clemson 17

OLE MISS AT MISS. STATE: The rivalry is great, even when the teams are not. This one could be a classic. Ole Miss 28, Miss. State 24

FLORIDA STATE AT FLORIDA: Hopefully, a lopsided loss will convince Bobby Bowden to call it quits. Florida 34, FSU 14

ARKANSAS AT LSU: If Arkansas had just a little more defense I'd pick the upset here ... but it doesn't. LSU 31, Arkansas 27

TENNESSEE AT KENTUCKY: Does UT have enough duct-tape and rubber bands to hold its injury-riddled defense together another week? Maybe. Tennessee 34, Kentucky 31

GEORGIA AT GEORGIA TECH: This one could get ugly. Georgia Tech 38, Georgia 28

James' picks

OLE MISS AT MISS. STATE: Ole Miss 45-28 over MSU

GEORGIA AT GEORGIA TECH: Tech 42-21 over Georgia

Dave's picks

ALABAMA AT AUBURN (FRIDAY): Auburn will play 'Bama tight for three quarters but the talent gap is too big. Tide, 28-17

CLEMSON AT SOUTH CAROLINA: Clemson is rolling, riding high after last week. South Carolina knows how to lose these games. Clemson, 20-17

OLE MISS AT MISS. STATE: Ole Miss can be the third best overall team in the SEC. Not bad considering how the Rebels slipped at one point. Ole Miss, 35-10

FLORIDA STATE AT FLORIDA: Florida has Atlanta in its sites and wants to continue playing well. Still, this is a rivalry so it might be close for a half. Gators, 38-23

ARKANSAS AT LSU: The Tigers don't have much to play for and don't have a coach that understands the not-so-difficult nuances of clock management. Arkansas, 24-20

TENNESSEE AT KENTUCKY: The Vols will certainly benefit from the return of S Janzen Jackson. UT, 30-17

GEORGIA AT GEORGIA TECH: The Bulldogs are in the dumps and Tech isn't a fun team to prepare for. Georgia Tech, 20-17
