The Tennessee coaching staff got a late-night surprise when Florida defensive lineman Calvin Smith decided to become a Volunteer.

According to Smith's head Coach Mark Berman, the Hialeah star athlete is definitely a Vol.

"We are running interviews through me," Coach Berman told InsideTennesseee.com on Tuesday morning. "Yes, Calvin committed to Tennessee late last night."

According to Berman, it was Smith's official visit that sealed the deal for the standout defender.

"He had a great visit there," Berman said. "He really connected well with the coaching staff. Coming from a big city, Calvin also thought that Knoxville was big enough to give him a big city feel."

Berman said that he and Smith spoke about what schools he liked yesterday.

"I knew he was close to making a decision," Berman said. "Now, I have confirmed it. Coach Lane Kiffin and some of the Tennessee coaches are expected here today. That coaching staff has done a great job recruiting."

Smith will participate in an All-Star game in Hawaii and will be leaving Florida on Wednesday.
