Hamby proves to be solid signal caller

At regional 7-on-7 Tourneys there are always a surprise prospect or two that will catch the experts' eyes. One such prospect was Brentwood Academy signal caller Matt Hamby. Go "Inside" to get the latest on Hamby, and get our inside take on the in-state quarterback.

Tennessee was well represented at the Badger 7-on-7 Tournament held in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, last weekend.

While most states only brought one team to the event, Tennessee had three teams representing the Volunteer State.

One of the quarterbacks on the Tennessee Gold team was Brentwood Academy's Matt Hamby.

Hamby, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound, signal caller didn't start last season for Brentwood, but is excited about his fortunes this fall. The talented quarterback was pleased with his performance this past weekend.

"I thought I did all right," Hamby told InsideTennessee.com. "It was a blast, I got the chance to meet a lot of new in-state guys."

It also gave Hamby an opportunity to match his skills with some of the better quarterbacks in the Southeast.

"It gave me a chance to compare myself to some of the top quarterbacks in the area," Hamby said. "I'm excited about our team this fall at Brentwood, we should be a lot better."

Hamby currently holds no official offers, but is hoping that will change in the next few weeks.

There are several college coaches scheduled to come by our spring practices which begins next week," Hamby said. "It will be a great chance to show college coaches what I'm all about."

There is one school that Hamby is hoping to hear from.

"I grew up a big Tennessee fan," Hamby smiled. "It would be incredible to get an offer from them. I'm a Vol fan through the good times and bad."

Hamby will be heading back to Tuscaloosa for an Elite 11 QB camp and plans on attending one of the summer camps at Rocky Top.

"I will be attending several summer camps, including the one at Tennessee," Hamby said. "It will be a great chance for the Vol coaching staff to get to know me. This will be a busy summer, hopefully it will be worth it."

THE INSIDE TAKE ON MATT HAMBY

Great size and a good solid quarterback already.

Has a quick release and threw one of the better balls at the 7-on-7 Tourney.

Looks as if he has good mobility, throws with good fundamentals and appears to see the field fairly well.

Appears to have a very live and strong arm.

Needs to work on improving reading defenses. Look for Hamby to improve over the spring and summer. I definitely wouldn't be surprised to see him sign a DI scholarship. Very impressed with this young man.
