UT looks to bag Arnett

Tennessee has an edge in its recruitment of one of America's premier wide receiver prospects. That edge is named Charlie Baggett.

DeAnthony Arnett, a 6-0, 170-pounder from Saginaw, Mich., got a visit last week from Baggett, who is in his first year as UT's assistant head coach and receivers coach.

Ralph Arnett said by phone today that the visit went well and his younger brother remains very interested in the Vols.

"They're high on his list ... very high on his list," Ralph said. "They're in the top five. He likes Coach Baggett a lot. Coach Baggett coached one of my good friends, Clifton Ryan, who plays defensive tackle for the St. Louis Rams. Clifton had a lot of good things to say about Coach Baggett."

Baggett was a member of the Rams' coaching staff prior to taking the UT job last winter. Baggett also coached at Michigan State, Ryan's alma mater and a school that is within an hour's drive of Saginaw.

Ralph Arnett said his brother has received "close to 40" scholarship offers to date. He got one from former UT head coach Lane Kiffin shortly after participating in Tennessee's summer camp last June. DeAnthony has not yet met with Kiffin's successor, Derek Dooley, but has spoken with the new Vol head man by phone. The two will be meeting this summer.

"We'll be down there this summer," said Ralph, who accompanied his brother on last June's camp visit to UT. "We're all going to visit this summer and meet Coach Dooley. I know D's coming back for an unofficial. He might come to watch the camp but he won't participate. He's through camping. I told him he needs to be a kid this summer. We don't want his whole childhood taken away from him. He's done everything so far that I've asked him to do - grades, camps, everything."

Ralph Arnett said one of the Midwest's premier running backs will be joining DeAnthony when he makes that unofficial visit to Knoxville later this year.

"DeAnthony's coming back, along with Justice Hayes and his family from Grand Blanc, Michigan," Ralph said.

Hayes is a 5-10, 182-pounder with 4.45 speed who, like DeAnthony Arnett, is rated a 4-star prospect by Scout.com.

Tabbed co-MVP of the Nike Combine last weekend in Columbus, Ohio, DeAnthony currently has five schools at the top of his list.

"Michigan State is a slight leader right now," Ralph Arnett said, adding that the top five also includes "UT, USC, Notre Dame and Cal."

Although DeAnthony has not scheduled any official visits, his brother noted that "We know for sure USC and Tennessee are getting official visits. And we can see Michigan State anytime. It's just 45 minutes away."

In an odd twist of fate, DeAnthony Arnett's college coach may well be either current UT head man Derek Dooley or predecessor Lane Kiffin.

"DeAnthony likes Coach Kiffin a lot," Ralph said. "He offered him the day after signing day. The letter was Feb. 4, and signing day was the 3rd. That was sweet, man."
