Rocky Top roundup

Just when you think you've seen everything the Rocky Top Summer League has to offer, you get something unexpected ... competitive games.

Thursday's three-game slate at Knoxville's Bearden High Gym produced two squeakers and just one double-digit victory. Here's a recap:

DeROYAL 111, RAY'S ESG 108

Tennessee's 6-10, 270-pound Brian Williams scored on a driving three-point play with 45 seconds left, turning a 104-106 deficit into a 107-106 lead that DeRoyal never relinquished.

Vol signee Jordan McRae made one of two free throws with 8.2 seconds left to pad the lead to 110-106 and UT point guard Melvin Goins made one of two with 5.1 seconds left to secure the final margin.

Williams finished with 26 points on 11-of-20 field-goal shooting and 3-of-4 foul shooting. Darryl Garrett added 23 points. McRae hit 7 of 17 field-goal tries but just 3 of 7 foul shots en route to 17 points. Goins was 6 of 12 from the field but a mere 3 of 8 from the line, finishing with 15 points.

Tennessee senior Steven Pearl muscled in 11 of 16 shots from the floor and 4 of 7 from the free-throw line en route to a team-high 26 points for Ray's. Vol signee Trae Golden was 6 of 12 from the floor and 4 of 4 from the line en route to 19. Tennessee senior Josh Bone chipped in 13 points on 5-of-13 shooting from the field.

CHOICE SPINE 119, NEWS-SENTINEL 104

Chattanooga's Ricky Taylor led the winners with 27. Vol junior Cameron Tatum drained 9 of 20 shots and chipped in 23 points.

Tennessee's Scotty Hopson hit 15 of 28 shots en route to 37 points in pacing the losing cause. Ex-Vol Dane Bradshaw added 18.

FIRST TENNESSEE 102, RICHARDSON 98

Balanced scoring enabled First Tennessee to overcome a 31-point outburst by former Vol C.J. Watson, now with the NBA's Golden State Warriors.
