Wasting no time, Tennessee's offense turned the ball over on the second scrimmage play. Jonathan Crompton's first pass was picked off by Vanderbilt's Myron Lewis at the Vol 34-yard line. The UT defense held, however, and Vandy wound up punting the ball. After a three-and-out on UT's second possession, Crompton was replaced by redshirt freshman B. J. Coleman.

| KEY PLAY |

Tennessee blew a golden scoring opportunity when an 18-yard pass from Coleman to Lucas Taylor that carried to the Vandy 26-yard line was nullified by an illegal formation penalty. It seems Vol tackle Chris Scott was not quite on the line of scrimmage before the snap.
| KEY PLAYER |
Vol tailback Lennon Creer. He carried on the final three snaps of the quarter, posting gains of 11, 8 and 12 yards. These runs culminated in a second-quarter TD.
| KEY STAT |
Neither team registered a passing yard. Tennessee was 0 for 2 throwing, Vandy 0 for 0. The Vols had 52 rushing yards, Vandy 9.

Continuing a drive begun late in the first quarter, Tennessee capped a nine-play scoring march with an eight-yard Montario Hardesty touchdown run to go up 7-0 with 11:25 left in the period. After a short Vandy punt, Hardesty rambled 27 yards to set up a 25-yard Daniel Lincoln field goal that padded the lead to 10-0. Four plays later, Eric Berry intercepted a Chris Nickson pass and returned it 45 yards for a TD that widened the gap to 17-0. Seconds before halftime, Brent Vinson returned a Mackenzi Adams pass 69 yards to set up a 24-yard Lincoln field goal that boosted the score to 20-0.

| KEY PLAY |
On third and four at the Vanderbilt 27-yard line, Coleman gained 10 yards on a quarterback draw. The Vols scored their only offensive TD of the game three plays later.
| KEY PLAYER |
Berry. His 45-yard interception return turned a 10-0 lead into a 17-0 bulge and quieted the Vandy crowd.
| KEY STAT |
Vandy's 25 first-half plays gained a mere 25 net yards. The Commodores were just 1 of 7 on third-down conversion tries.

Vanderbilt marched to the UT 14-yard line on its first possession of the second half and Bryant Hahnfeldt booted a 31-yard field goal that whittled Tennessee's lead to 20-3. Late in the quarter Reshard Langford picked off a Coleman pass in the right flat and returned it 42 yards for a TD that narrowed the gap to 20-10.
| KEY PLAY |
Lankford's touchdown return. Given how poorly Vanderbilt's offense was playing, a defensive score was the only way the Commodores could get back in the game.
| KEY PLAYER |
Adams. He provided a spark by completing 4 of 7 passes for 36 yards on Vandy's field goal drive.
| KEY STAT |
Tennessee used four quarterbacks in the quarter - Coleman, Crompton, Gerald Jones (in the G-Gun) and Eric Berry (in the Wild Berry). None was effective.

A fumble by Lennon Creer gave Vanderbilt the ball at its 41-yard line but the Vol defense again rose to the occasion and forced a punt. Vandy drove to the UT 39-yard line on its next possession but came up a yard short on a fourth-and-10 pass from Adams to Sean Walker. The Commodores drove to the Vol 20-yard line in the final seconds only to see a Chris Walker sack seal their doom on the game's final play.
| KEY PLAY |
A seven-yard sack by Vol defensive tackle Dan Williams killed the Vandy drive following Creer's fumble. A Commodore score there could've led to a different outcome altogether.
| KEY PLAYER |
Vol tailback Arian Foster. He had gains of 17 and 22 yards that helped UT notch some first downs, eat some clock and wipe out Vandy's comeback hopes.
| KEY STAT |
Tennessee now has beaten Vanderbilt 25 times in the past 26 meetings.
