The Kentucky Wildcats drove to Tennessee's 22-yard line on the opening possession but wound up punting the ball away following two killer penalties. After a three-and-out by the Vols, UK again drove to the UT 22, this time getting a 40-yard Lones Seiber field goal to take a 3-0 lead. Tennessee marched to the Kentucky 13 but Daniel Lincoln missed a 31-yard field goal.

| KEY PLAYER |
Seiber. A native of Knoxville, he provided the quarter's only scoring with his 40-yard kick.
| KEY STAT |

A 15-yard offensive interference penalty against Austin Rogers nullified a 15-yard pass play and stymied UT's first possession of the quarter. After a three-and-out on their second possession of the period, UT got the ball at the UK 35 following a short Kentucky punt. Twelve plays later Jonathan Crompton sneaked over the goal line on fourth-and-one on the final play of the first half to give the Vols a 7-3 lead.

| KEY PLAY |
On fourth and two at the UK 27-yard line, Crompton kept for a two-yard gain and a crucial first down on the Vols' TD drive.
| KEY PLAYER |
UT's Gerald Jones. He had a 7-yard run out of the G-Gun formation and caught both of the pass completions in the quarter, a 10-yarder on a screen and a three-yarder in the flat.
| KEY STAT |
Tennessee's defense limited Kentucky to 58 yards of total offense in the first half - 43 rushing and 15 passing.

Tennessee's third play of the second half was a 63-yard touchdown strike from Crompton to Denarius Moore, widening the gap to 14-3. Kentucky advanced to the Vol 39-yard line but QB Randall Cobb was sacked on fourth and two by Nevin McKenzie. After an exchange of punts, Tennessee was driving as the quarter ended.
| KEY PLAY |
The Crompton-Moore hookup. It was Tennessee's longest pass play of the season. It was UT's second TD in as many possessions and it invigorated the rain-drenched crowd.
| KEY PLAYER |
Crompton. In addition to the 63-yard TD pass, he picked up first downs on runs of 7 and 10 yards during the quarter.
| KEY STAT |
Thirteen of UT's 14 plays in the period were runs. The lone pass was the TD strike to Moore.

A five-yard toss sweep by Lennon Creer on the second play of the quarter capped a 10-play, 80-yard TD drive as Tennessee went up 21-3. On UT's next possession Gerald Jones broke a G-Gun keeper 55 yards only to step out of bounds at the UK 1-yard line. He atoned by scoring from the 2-yard line on third-and-goal, boosting the lead to 28-3. Kentucky went 68 yards in seven plays against Vol reserves and scored on an Alfonso Smith TD run with 3:44 left to secure the final margin.
| KEY PLAY |
With UK down 21-3, Smith was stopped for a two-yard loss on third-and-six at the Vol 45-yard line by Rico McCoy. The Big Blue then raised the white flag by punting the ball away with around 10 minutes left.
| KEY PLAYER |
Gerald Jones. His 55-yard burst and two-yard TD run made sure Phillip Fulmer's final game as Vol head man was a victory.
| KEY STAT |
Thirty of Tennessee's final 31 plays were runs. Once the Crompton-Moore TD bomb provided a two-score lead, the Vols did not throw again.
